Search Engines Ranks No. 2 in Study |

Internet users who use search engines increased over the last year.
Based on a study conducted this autumn, search engines are now ranked
as second among online tasks.
E-mail usage is still the most popular online application. In fact, 77% out of the sampled population used e-mails daily.
The study shows that out of the 94 million who went online during a
specific day of the study, approximately 63% used search engines
compared with only 56% in June of 2004, the American Life Project and
the Pew Internet said.
“Until recently, search engines and news have been running
neck-and-neck for the number 2 rank among online tasks. However, search
had an impressive jump of 46 % over the past year which widened the gap
over news,” Lee Rainie, the project director, said.
COM Score Media Metrix conducted tracking which found that internet
users averages 24 minutes a day on e-mail applications compared with a
4-minute average for search engines. The Pew researchers remarked that
this gap signals that e-mail remains a dominant application.
However, although the number of people who use e-mail daily has
grown due to the increase in the overall online population, the
percentage of the daily number of people accessing e-mail has dropped.
Based on the 2004 survey, e-mail usage declined to 85 percent.
The study was a random telephone-based survey of 1,557 Internet users.
It was conducted on September 13 to October 14. The study has a margin
of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
