Google Inc. with several distinguished scientists began working to make
information on human genes available online. “The Google Story”, a book
profiling the search engine giant by David Wise, states that the Gene
project will speed up the pace of genetic and medical researches that
could immensely improve future medical care.
Recorded and provided by the National Institute of Health and
geneticist Craig David, Google Inc. has already accessed approximately
30,000 sets of human genes.
“The project is something geneticists have wanted to do for
generations,” states Venter on his interview on The Google Story. “We
need to use the largest computers in the world. And by working with
Google, we are trying to characterize all the gees on the planet and
understand their evolutionary development,” he added.
It is expected that such a project would generate controversies.
With people fearing that too much sensitive and private information are
already available online, privacy concerns would seriously be an issue
when people’s genes, which contain clues to their physical traits, are
made accessible online.
