As Google expands its scope of services, the company finds itself in
direct competition with eBay. Both companies have added communications
to their list of services. Google has created Google Talk, a voice
service and instant messaging for users. On the other hand, eBay bought
the internet phone service Skype.
Google, with its attempt to challenge eBay, Yellow Pages directories
and online jobs sites, have launched its newest addition to its web
site that allows users to publish information such as job listings,
recipes and classified ads.
This website, called the Google Base, allows users to submit
information about a wide range of business-related or personal items.
All these information is stored in a publicly searchable database,
maintained by Google and free of charge.
Google stated that the Google Base is designed for individuals and
businesspersons who have information to share but has no idea how to
gain an audience. The Google Base would only host the content. The
contributors are allowed to add labels with specific details of the ad
to attract more attention.
The current version of Google Base is in beta testing but could
still be used to search every topic under the sun. However, with all
the information to be stored, Google will have to maintain the site and
clear out spam and pornography.
