Microsoft Corp., in response to the launching of Google Inc.’s Google
Base service, is testing its own online marketplace called Fremont.
The
Fremont, which is free of charge, provides users to post listings in
their database. The information allowed to be contributed includes a
range of topics from business to personal listings.
The software giant Microsoft is planning to index each listing. In doing so, it will be added to Microsoft’s own search engine.
Although the Fremont service was created primarily as an online
marketplace, it serves several other features. According to Microsoft,
they are planning to improve the listing with localized maps and make
it accessible through its newly restored portal Live.com.
All of these features provide a means for companies and individuals
without strong web-presence to enhance its visibility on the Internet
community. It will benefit individuals and companies to take part in
the rising online commerce. The Fremont, which also benefits
Microsoft’s revenue, will generate more ad sales through its website.
According to Microsoft on Tuesday, the Fremont service is restricted to
Microsoft employee use for now. However, an internet user could take a
glimpse on this new feature by visiting Fremont.live.com.
